Need to Know: Delgado jury selection begins
Last Modified: Monday, May 12, 2008 at 7:32 p.m.
The first day of jury selection started Monday for the trial of Tyrone Delgado, charged with first-degree murder and burglary in the 1999 strangling death of FBI secretary Melissa Mooney.
Jury selection continues Tuesday in the county courthouse, and the month-long trial is expected to start Wednesday.
More than 200 witnesses were summoned to appear in the 9-year-old case, said Ben David, district attorney for New Hanover and Pender counties, who represents the state on the case.
David hinted to potential jurors in court that their duty, while necessary and needed, won't be easy or pleasant.
"We're going to be very graphic at times," David said.
"We have to be. ... I think it's fair to say that all 12 of you will feel uncomfortable in this case."

Lawmakers to hear about youth plan
Local youth and community representatives recently attended the NC Youth Summit. Now the state committee that organized the event is taking
25 young adults to the General Assembly.
About 200 youths ages 16 to 21 attended the summit held April 18 and 19 in Greensboro.
The Cape Fear Workforce Development Board sponsored eight youths to attend and four youths with Brooks and Associates, a Brunswick County youth agency, were also invited.
Brandon Hickman and Sandra McClammy with Wilmington's Urban Promotions, a local group aimed at helping youth deal with social problems, conducted workshops on grooming, etiquette and interviewing techniques at the statewide summit.
Selected youths will go to the General Assembly this month to share the statewide NC Youth Summit Plan of Action with legislators.
They will present the plan, tour the General Assembly and eat lunch with legislators.
