Youth make clean
sweep for literacy
A group of 10 from Laurel Springs Baptist Church in Deep Gap visited for the second year in a row and helped with clean-up projects at Brunswick County Literacy Council, Habitat for Humanity, The First Tee and the Computers for Kids project.
Another group of 24 young people and chaperones from Stokesdale United Methodist Church volunteered with projects at Hope Chests on Oak Island and Bolivia, Brunswick Family Assistance, The First Tee, Keep Brunswick Beautiful and Brunswick County Emergency Management Services. Youth volunteers were Sarah Christopher, Ben Christopher, Tyler McGee, Lindsay McGee, Kevin Landreth, Brian Landreth, Katelyn Jones, Alexis Beshears, Shelby Thomas, Skylar Thomas, Katherine Baxter, Erin Fulp and Kaitlyn Fulp. Adult volunteers were Kim Fulp, Gene Fulp, Karen Landreth, Mandy McGee, Elaine Christopher, Sally Baxter, Bonita Beshears, Susan Jones, Todd Thomas, Lisa Thomas and Pastor Claudia Harrelson.
Both groups stayed on Oak Island while in Brunswick County. All the volunteer activities were organized through Brunswick County Volunteer Center Director Jayne Mathews.

15th annual street of shops: Sponsored by the women of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and St. Philip's Episcopal Church. Doors open at 9 a.m. and close at 2 p.m. Oct. 6 at the Sacred Heart Parish Hall, N.C. 211 and Dosher Cutoff, Southport. The bazaar will feature Carolina snowflakes, gift baskets, wreaths for all seasons, handcrafted items and homemade goodies. Tickets will be sold for a drawing to win various prizes. Aglow international of whiteville: Velma Hilburn will be guest speaker at 10 a.m. Saturday at The Cinema Club, 615 Madison St., Whiteville. Fellowship and refreshments at 9:30 a.m.
Blessings on the Beach Barefoot Beach Chapel: Services are held 8:30 a.m. Sundays through Labor Day weekend at the beachfront cabana located at East Beach Drive and SE 46th Street, Oak Island. Services are nondenominational. The Rev. Betty Jo Blackmon delivers the message. Bring a chair or blanket to sit on. Details: 278-9510.
Carvers Creek AME Zion Church: A youth program will be at 3 p.m. Aug. 19 at 210 Carvers Creek Church Road, Council. Rev. Corey Blanks and the New Zion AME Zion Church, Lisbon community, will be guests.
Coastal christian center: The 2007 Golf Tournament at Barefoot Golf: the Norman Course will be held at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 1. $100 entry fee includes greens and cart fee, heavy hors d'oeuvres and beverage. Silent auction and raffle for EZ Go Golf Cart. Proceeds go toward new youth building "The Upper Room." The church is in North Myrtle Beach, S.C. Details: (843) 272-5718.
love of christ church: A three-night revival will be 7 p.m. Monday with Sister Debbie Smith; Tuesday with Sister Pauline Hankins; and Wednesday with Brother Tony Sellars. The church is at 4308 U.S. 17 E. Bolivia.
Ocean view baptist church: Registration is now open for singers for the 2007 Singing Christmas Tree. Rehearsals are 7:45-9 p.m. Wednesdays starting Sept. 5. Performance dates are Dec. 6-10. The church is at 7300 N. King's Highway, Myrtle Beach, S.C. Details: (843) 449-3384.

trinity united methodist church: The church will celebrate the opening of its new facilities with a Consecration Service today. Bishop Al Gwinn will be the guest preacher. There will be only one worship service that day at 10 a.m. in the Fellowship Hall. At 11:30 a.m. there will be tours of the facilities and at noon there will be a potluck luncheon.
