State health regulators have issued a swimming advisory for a section of Banks Channel in Wrightsville Beach.
A sign now posted 150 yards north of Iula Street, near the Hanover Seaside Club, advises against swimming and other water-related activities within 200 feet due to high bacteria readings.
Water samples taken Tuesday showed levels of enterococci bacteria well above the federal and state limit of 104 count per 100 milliliters.
The triplicate testing came back with readings of 478, 659 and 453.
Contact with contaminated water can lead to skin irritation and gastrointestinal problems.
Officials plan to take additional samples Thursday and will lift the advisory when the readings come back within safe limits.
