Pam Toll
Occupation: Wilmington artist

Pam Toll works with a fierce calm, her knee nearly ready to bust through a hole in her paint-smattered jeans. The earthy creator, 52, stays focused on the task at hand no matter what’s swirling around her. “That’s what I do. I create chaos and then form order out of it,” she says, laughing.

The Oklahoma-born mother of two has demonstrated some formidable creative chops since she settled in the Port City 22 years ago. She founded an art studio, Acme Art Company, and the two-week international art colony No Boundaries Inc., inspired by a stint in Macedonia. For eight years, she’s taught students the techniques and vocation of artistry at the University of North Carolina Wilmington, in addition to frequent travels, exhibitions and conversations to lure world-class artists to the Port City.

Resolve fuels this boundless multi-tasking, though Toll is convinced her students liken her multi-tasking to absent-mindedness. “It’s a little more insane than I like,” she says. “But when opportunities come, you have to take them.” And with that, she barrels off toward the next endeavor, ready to make another idea take form when most would need to stop for a breather.
