Some sweet holiday helpers

Want to find a way to warm yourself as the season cools off? These drinks are cause for celebration.
So many excuses to celebrate during the holidays, so few cocktails in your bartending repertoire. Not to worry, here are some (perhaps new to you) adult beverages to try for your next party or when you’re enjoying a romantic evening in front of the fire.
Whether it’s a seasonal martini, or a hot toddy, these will surely warm the cockles of your heart during the chilly holiday months ahead.

Cinnamon creation
Hot Buttered Rum

Tasty mulled cider or even Irish coffee seem to get more attention when it gets cold outside. I’m surprised more people don’t make this one. After all, it has “hot” and “buttered” in its name. Does it really matter what the basis of the drink is? In this case, it’s rum. Which is fine, too.
2 cups water
½ stick (¼ cup) unsalted butter
¼ cup packed dark brown sugar
1 teaspoon cinnamon
½ teaspoon of freshly grated nutmeg
¼ teaspoon ground cloves
⅛ teaspoon salt
⅔ cup dark rum
Bring water, butter, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves and salt to a boil in a 1½- to 2-quart saucepan over moderately high heat. Reduce heat and simmer, whisking occasionally, 10 minutes. Remove from heat and stir in rum. Serve hot.
Makes 4 drinks.

A VANILLA Experience
Gingerbread Man Martini

In your wilder days, you might have done a shot at a bar that goes by this very same name. This recipe from Deluxe elevates the mixture to an elegant cocktail with a cinnamon-sugar coated rim.
1 ounce vanilla vodka
1 ounce Bailey’s Irish Cream
1 ounce cinnamon schnapps
1 ounce butterscotch schnapps
Add ingredients to a shaker filled with ice. Strain into a martini glass.

Classic champagne
Poinsettia

It has champagne, it’s red and has a very holiday-appropriate name. What more do you need in a holiday drink?
¼ cup vodka
¼ cup champagne
½ cup cranberry juice
Crushed ice
2 strips orange zest
Combine the vodka, champagne and juice in a large, stemmed wine glass or champagne flute. Add crushed ice and stir until well chilled. Twist the orange strips over the glass, drop them in and serve.

HOT COCOA, REDUX
Hot Chocolate with a kick

One thing that has always perplexed me about winter-time drinks – the seeming absence of hot chocolate-based beverages. I decided to correct that problem here.
I used a homemade hot-chocolate mix (this one is Food Network personality Alton Brown’s recipe) and made some additions. Although you can be creative and add orange or raspberry liqueur, I decided to make double chocolate for this one.

Hot Chocolate mix
2 cups powdered sugar
1 cup cocoa
2½ cups powdered milk
1 teaspoon salt
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1 pinch cayenne pepper

A MINT MOMENT
Peppermint and a chocolate splash

Bartender James Smith at Zooi’s sofa bar in The Forum used his grandfather’s love of peppermint ice cream as the inspiration for this drink. He mellowed the peppermint flavor with chocolate.
1½ ounce vanilla vodka
1 ounce peppermint schnapps
½ ounce white creme de cacao
Splash of milk
Grenadine
Green creme de menthe
Peppermint stick, for garnish
In a shaker filled with ice, add vodka, peppermint schnapps, creme de cacao and milk. Shake well and strain into a martini glass. Drizzle small drops of grenadine and green creme de menthe on top. Garnish with a peppermint stick.
