Pirates Team Capsules

• Boys Basketball
  • Last year: 14-13 overall, 7-3 Coastal Plains; lost in first round of playoffs
    Starters back: 2 – G TJ Nixon, F DJ Fuller.
    What's old: Coach Rodney Orr’s focus on defense. The Pirates will stick with man coverage while they alter the game on the offensive end this season.
    What's new: The Pirates gain three transfers, including senior guard Candon Rusin, who has signed a letter of intent at Marist.
    Player to watch: Candon Rusin. The 6-foot-3 senior guard was the Vermont Basketball Coaches Association Player of the Year last season after averaging 28.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 4.5 assists per game.
    Coach says: “What we’re most excited about is we feel like we got a group of competitors and if you’re willing to compete, everything else seems to fall into place,” said coach Rodney Orr. “They want to win. They’re hungry, they’re competitive.”
    
• Girls Basketball
  • Last year: 5-20, 2-10 Coastal Plains
    Starters back: 4 – Jessica Warren, Brittany Luger, Kaleigh Johnson, Danielle Milliner
    What’s old: Coach Sarah Graves has an aggressive, hardworking bunch that keeps fighting.
    What’s new: The Pirates will seek to use their speed more this season.
    Player to watch: Jessica Warren plays good defense and leads the fast break well after steals.
    Coach says: “I’d like to at least have a winning record in conference, I think we’ve got a good chance at that.”
    
• Wrestling
  • Starters back: 6 – Ric McCutchen (119/125), David Croft (125/130), Kyle Proulx (130/135), Brad Lutterloah (160/171), Stewart Nadeau (171), Josh Schaeffer (215/HWT)
    What's old: The team has lots of wrestlers back from last year’s team that finished second in the dual team state championships.
    What's new: Jake Pence takes over as coach after serving as an assistant last season. Pence spent seven years as the coach at Laney.
    Wrestler to watch: Junior David Croft won 37 matches last year and was a state qualifier.
    Coach says: “This team has great work ethic and wants to get back to the state finals.”
