Cougars Team Capsules

• Boys Basketball
  • Last year: 16-10, 7-5 Waccamaw; lost in second round playoffs
    Starters back: 4 – Ervin Hall, Edward McNeill, Joey Hines, Rashawn Jenkins.
    What’s old: The Cougars will continue to pound the ball down low and screen off the ball.
    What’s new: They will incorporate more four out-one in with the offense.
    Player to watch: Guard Edward McNeill runs the team and has a good all around game. Coach Dan McGougan expects McNeill’s offense to pick up this year, and his turnovers to go down.
    Coach says: The Cougars won’t be changing up much of last year’s winning formula.
    
• Girls Basketball
  • Last year: 9-16, 4-8 Waccamaw
    Starters back: 4 – Christina Deveney, Rose Coley, Teak Smith, Britney Spivey
    What’s old: The starting lineup will return four starters for coach Mike Isenburg’s club.
    What’s new: The rest of the lineup will feature mostly newcomers.
    Player to watch: Christina Deveney is South Brunswick’s do-it-all forward. She has played all five positions at times and handles the ball well for her size.
    Coach says: “The good news is that we got four starters back, but the bad news is that we don’t have anyone else back.”
    
• Swimming
  • Swimmers back: 7 boys, 10 girls
    What’s old: John Minton graduated from the boys team.
    What’s new: 16 new swimmers altogether, as well as some of the girls swimming multiple events instead of just one.
    Swimmers to watch: Freshman Myles Williams and senior Mary Ann Kincer
    Coach says: “This is the first year where I’ve had more boys on the team than girls,” Lucia Kinser said.
    
• Wrestling
  • Starters back: 8 – Matt Craven (103), Jeromy Roundtree (119), Charlie Martin (125/130), Jonathan Marvin (135), Stephen Ikaloych (152), Michael Fayak (160), Steven Fayak (171), Rick Logan (HWT)
    What's old: Three state qualifiers from last year – Roundtree, Martin, and Marvin – are back.
    What's new: West Brunswick transfer Sebestian Brothers could enter the lineup at 135 or 140.
    Wrestler to watch: Junior Jeromy Roundtree was 41-3 last year and was a state qualifier.
    Coach says: “We can do pretty well if we can get our lineup together.”
