Scorpions Team Capsules

• Boys Basketball
  • Last Year: 9-14, 4-8 Waccamaw
    Starters back: 2 – Reggie Cobia, Shawn Sanders
    What’s old: Coach Travis Lemanski says this is the most depth he’s ever had.
    What’s new: The Scorpions will bring up a solid group from the junior varsity squad.
    Player to Watch: Shawn Sanders averaged 20 points, 10 rebounds last year. He’s a quick leaper and rebounds very well.
    Coach says: “With the athletes we have at North, I feel every year that we can compete. If we can all get on the same page, I expect us to be really good. If we can’t all get on the same page, and there’s a guy out there not buying into the team aspect of the game, then we’ll continue to struggle.”
    
• Girls Basketball
  • Last year: 16-10, 8-4 Waccamaw; Lost second round of state playoffs
    Starters back: 3 – Tyrea Fisher, Asheley Robbins, Latesha Harrison
    What’s old: Coach Travis Fortune is hopeful that his club will keep up the defensive pressure.
    What’s new: The Scorpions will look to play full court defense more this season.
    Player to watch: Guard Tyrea Fisher sees the floor well and applies good ball pressure. Fortune hopes to see her develop into more of a scorer this year.
    Coach says: “We’re going to be in a lot better shape this year and hopefully extend our defense full court.”
    
• Wrestling
  • Starters back: 3 – James Fitzpatrick (125), Nick Barnes (152), Robert Irwin (215)
    What's old: Not much. Only a handful of wrestlers are back from last year.
    What's new: Thomas York takes over the team after serving as the coach at Eastern Randolph last year. The team has 40 freshmen.
    Wrestler to watch: Nick Barnes was 33-10 last year and qualified for states.
    Coach says: “The school is very supportive. We got new singlets and we are wrestling in the auxiliary gym. It’s a bunch of young guys so we are looking to have fun this year and get some experience.”
