Wildcats Team Capsules

• Boys Basketball
  • Last year: 26-3 overall, 12-0 Mideastern; lost in third round of playoffs
    Starters back: 1 – G Jakiel Moore
    What's old: The Wildcats’ athleticism. They’re smaller and shorter than in recent years, but coach Kirk Angel hopes to use their speed to press more.
    What's new: Angel and his staff. The first-year coach had been an assistant for three years before filling the top position this summer. He plans to return to the up-and-down style of play of the 2007 state championship team.
    Player to watch: Moore. After playing for three schools his first three years, Moore has settled in with the Wildcats. The 6-foot-3 guard taken on more of a leadership role as a senior and has been the team’s leading scorer in early games so far.
    Coach says: “We’re not as talented as we have been in the past, but their work ethic is incredible,” said Angel. “I plan on playing a lot faster than we did last year. … I want our athletes to be able to play.”
    
• Girls Basketball
  • Last year: 14-12, 7-5 Mideastern Lost first round state playoffs
    Starters back: 3 - Kiara Brewster, Tysheia Robinson, Morgan King
    What's old: Trying to create offense from defense
    What's new: The Wildcats might get out and go into some transition this year.
    Player to watch: Guard Kiara Brewster is long, quick and can be a defensive terror.
    Coach says: "There’s a little bit more speed than we’re always used to. If those kids that are getting some playing time, use their speed and be smart and make decisions most of the time, that’ll put a lot of pressure on other teams offensively and defensively."
    
• Swimming
  • Swimmers back: 10 boys, 12 girls
    What’s old: Preston Burris graduated from the boys team, while girls team members Anna Wayne and Kat Kearney are swimming collegiately.
    What’s new: Assistant coach William Rinehart
    Swimmers to watch: Sophomore Adam Hunter and, who else, junior Cari Blalock
    Coach says: “This is the highest boys (team) I’ve ever had,” Suzanne Cassidy said. “This is the most potential we’ve ever had.”
    
• Wrestling
  • Starters back: 7–Demetrious Leonard (112), John Talbert (119), Dominique Fisher (125), Tyree McLeod (135), Joel Puntz (140), Alex Baker (152)
    What's old: Freshman Austin Graham has been impressive in his first few matches at 103 pounds.
    What's new: Coach Mike Campbell takes over the team. He was previously the coach at High Point Central and Ragsdale, where he won three team state championships
    Wrestler to watch: Demetrious Leonard finished second in the Mideastern Conference championships last season.
    Coach says: “We should be strong at designated weight classes, but we are very young as a team.”
