Vikings Team Capsules

• Boys Basketball
  • Last year: 20-9 overall, 10-2 Mideastern; lost in third round of playoffs
    Starters back: 2–G Zack Allen, F Logan Cain
    What's old: Coach Brett Queen’s focus on team defense. The Vikings shut down better, more athletic players last season by playing as a unit. Look for them to rely on that again this season.
    What's new: Jordan Jeremias, sort of. A senior on last year’s team, the UNCW freshman is on the coaching staff and works with guards.
    Player to watch: Allen. The 5-foot-11 point guard is a three-year starter and will be counted on to score more this year. He averaged 11.3 points per game as a junior.
    Coach says: “We have varsity experience,” Queen said, “we just don’t have a whole lot of varsity playing experience because we didn’t play a whole lot of guys last year. ... We’re going to be counting on a lot of guys that were on the varsity team last year that were more role players last year.”
    
• Girls Basketball
  • Last year: 19-9, 7-5 Mideastern; Lost second round state playoffs
    Starters back: 3 - Danielle Bongiorno, Katy Norris, McKenzi Edwards
    What's old: The Vikings will try to push the ball on the fast break and play tough defense.
    What's new: Coach Ray Beatty’s club will be able to score from more positions on the floor.
    Player to watch: Danielle Bongiorno is the floor leader for the Vikings.
    
• Swimming
  • Swimmers back: 6 boys, 9 girls
    What’s old: Trevor Narayan and Leigh Russell graduated.
    What’s new: Five newcomers for the boys, and expect the girls to swim different events in order to pick up points for the team.
    Swimmers to watch: Junior Christian Dias and senior Kayla Ford
    Coach Says: “We don’t have any seniors on the (boys) team,” Tammy Pruden said. “I can’t remember this ever happening.”
    
• Wrestling
  • Starters back: 9–Heath Tryer (112), Kyle Baker (119), Justin Tomlinson (130), Zach Eulo (135), Sam Spaulding (140), Raymond Frederick (145/152), Kevin Simpson (145/152), Graham Radford (171), Shawn Leonard (HWT)
    What's old: The team has a lot of returning starters, but most are still very inexperienced.
    What's new: Freshmen Warren Dobson (103), Cody Williams (152), Kendric McDuffie (160), Terry Caldwell (189) and Brandon Kiel (215) have all impressed coach Carlis Still.
    Wrestler to watch: Shawn Leonard finished second in the Mideastern Conference tournament last year at 215 pounds.
    Coach says: “This year we are looking to get some team wins, not just individual victories.”
