Screaming Eagles Team Capsules

• Boys Basketball
  • LAST YEAR: 8-17 overall, 3-9 Mideastern; did not make playoffs
    STARTERS BACK: 1 -- G C.J. Caldwell
    WHAT'S OLD: Not much. The Screaming Eagles have a lot of youth, with five sophomores on the roster and two that start.
    WHAT'S NEW: Coach Bryn McSwain replaced Chad Duncan in July. An assistant at Hoggard for five seasons, he brings a winning background to a program that is 52-116 all time.
    PLAYER TO WATCH: Travis Keys. The 6-foot-5 sophomore forward gives Ashley a true post presence.
    COACH SAYS: "I don't think they knew the type of intensity it takes to make it to the next level, to the playoffs," McSwain said. "They're tired of their record. … They're tired of getting their brains beat out and are looking to have a tremendous sense of pride in themselves. These guys are looking to be good."
• Girls Basketball
  • LAST YEAR: 6-19, 3-12 Mideastern
    STARTERS BACK: 4 -- Ashley Altman, Kelsey Hopper, Katia Holliday, Megan Goins
    WHAT'S OLD: Coach Adrienne Gale’s squad will focus on the small details.
    WHAT'S NEW: The Screaming Eagles will look to push the tempo.
    PLAYER TO WATCH: Kelsey Hopper can play any position on the floor. The junior is an offensive threat, maybe not great from the outside, but can attack the basket well and help with ball handling when needed.
    COACH SAYS: “Being that we didn’t lose that many, I think that we were really young last year. We’re working to build on our youth this year. And we return a lot this year.”
    
• Swimming
  • SWIMMERS BACK: 13 boys, 10 girls
    WHAT'S OLD: Curt Larose, Evan Anderson and Will Small have graduated only the boys side; Jessica Mariskanish and Sabrina Stalnaker are gone from the girls team.
    WHAT'S NEW: Only two of the 15 boys swimmers are fresh faces, while five new girls have joined that team.
    SWIMMERS TO WATCH: Senior David Thumser and freshman Callie Johnson
    COACH SAYS: "We're gaining ground," Alan Sandrin said. "We're closing the gap on Hoggard and New Hanover."
• Wrestling
  • STARTERS BACK: 8 – Carlos Sosa (125), Kevin Long (130), Jimmy Livingstone (135), Josh Armstrong (140), Aaron Griggs (145), Tate Taylor (160), Noel Ortiz (189), Willie Robinson (HWT)
    WHAT'S OLD: The team returns a lot of experienced wrestlers, especially in the middle of the lineup.
    WHAT'S NEW: The Eagles have to replace two of the better wrestlers in program history, Auggie Baltazar and H.L. Temoney.
    COACH SAYS: "Our goal is to finish second or third in the conference, have six state qualifiers and have two place in the top five at states."
